About. The Colt 45s joined the National League in 1962. But in
their third season, the club's name changed to the Astros - Taking their
new name from the famous NASA Space Centre just outside of Houston.
Stadium. When they became the Astros, they
moved into the world's first indoor baseball stadium. The Astrodome. The actual dome
towered nearly 20 stories above the playing field, and had a series of
skylights allowing the sunlight to grow the grass
playing surface. While the grass flourished in the big greenhouse, the glass panels presented a
bit of a problem. And a big on at that. During
afternoon games, players catching high balls were blinded by the sunlight
- despite their baseball caps. So about a third of the glass panels were coated with paint to
help reduce the glare. The players could see much better but the problem
just shifted as the grass started to wilt and die because of the little
sunlight coming through. So in the end a space age 'turf' was created,
which they named after the team.
The Astros moved into Minute Maid Park in 2000. It holds 42,000. This
stadium's main entrance is a reproduction of Union Station. The stadium has a retractable roof - handy
for keeping the scorching summer heat out. The locomotive theme continue
inside with a dull size 25 ton replica of a
19th century steam train which runs on an 800 foot long track around the
top of the stadium every time the Astros hit a homer.
The Astros are currently in the finals of the
2005 World Series. |
